A mathematical group of IA college athletes who were prosecuted past say authorities under dubious circumstances are suing for damages.
In a polite case filed Friday inwards the Des Moines federal court, 26 Iowa and Hawkeye State State athletes exact their rights were violated and reputations tarnished during an investigation by Iowa’s Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) that used warrantless searches.
Because of the DCI’s “illegal” investigation, the athletes’ lives, collegiate careers, and future opportunities were “severely upended,” according to the lawsuit.
Among those athletes was Eyioma Uwazurike. After playing for Ioway State from 2017 to 2021, Uwazurike was drafted past the capital of Colorado Broncos.
He started several games for his young squad but was suspended indefinitely past the NFL after existence supercharged inward Hawkeye State wit play violations and felony identity element fraud. That was because he placed bets on football game using his girlfriend’s account.
On March 1, 2024, a province court judge dismissed all charges against Uwazurike without prejudice.
Unconstitutional Searches
The job was DCI agents were using geolocation tech provider GeoComply’s Kibana tracking computer software to pry into students’ betting habits on college campuses.
GeoComply allows online gaming operators to ensure they are only when taking bets from users situated within the borders of the province inwards which they’re licensed.
But the keep company made Kibana usable to natural law enforcement agencies for employment inward detecting “hotspots” – areas where a large compactness of bets was occurring.

DCI Banned from Kibana

Most athletes pleaded guilty, paid a fine, and dealt with the consequences for their careers. Uwazurike, on with buster Cyclones football players Isaiah Lee Yuen Kam and Jirehl Brock, and grappler Paniro Johnson, fought the charges and were successful.
“The lives of these young men have got been disrupted and neutered in way of life stock-still in time to live full seen,” the athletes’ attorneys said inwards a statement.
“Many of them hold had their athletic careers ended, due to the State of Iowa’s unconstitutional employment of GeoComply’s Kibana software. The causa names the State of Iowa, DCI managing director St. Paul Feddersen, DCI helper director David Jobes, DCI special broker for sports wagering Ilium Nelson, and special agent Brian Sanger, among others. It seeks unspecified pecuniary redress from the state.
