Internationally acclaimed water ice skater Oksana Baiul fought back up tears as she addressed a duad one C people gathered inward front end of Las Vegas City Hall. The weekend downtown gathering was organized to show up backing for the people of Ukraine as the country continues to follow attacked past Russian troops.
Now married and using the gens of Oksana Baiul-Farina, she resides in Nevada. In 1994, she won a golden medal at the Olympics representing the then-newly main(a) land of Ukraine. She has stayed inwards soupcon with loved ones inwards Ukraine.
When i am speaking to my Ukrainian skating friends, who are posing inwards the bomb shelters, without food. They demand a lot of food, water, medicine. They are inwards demand of help,” Baiul-Farina told those gathered at metropolis hall on Saturday.
She says showing upwards for such rallies, “means so much to them… We are just supporting people in my country who are dying for no reason. And i reckon a lot of kids suffering.”
She also told the bunch she is “so privileged” to live inward the US. “But you feature to all realise — Ukraine is my land. It’s where I come up from. It’s what i testament e'er be, and i can’t block that,” Baiul-Farina said.
“My bosom is broken,” Baiul-Farina further told the crowd. “And it’s with the people of Ukraine.”
Daughter Joins in Shouting for Ukraine
At unity point, she introduced her youth daughter, Sophia. The missy waved to the crowd. Later, she joined in the call, “United we stand.”
Upon audition her daughter repeating the rallying cry, Baiul-Farina picked upwardly the girl. She held her in her arms. At her mother’s request, Sophia at a microphone formerly once more repeated, “United we stand.”
The bunch cheered. Then, Sophia led the crowd together once again inwards a hearten of “United we stand.”
The bunch yelled it come out again.
Message to Ukrainian Troops
At the shut of her remarks, Baiul-Farina offered a subject matter to the Ukrainian soldiers:
“We are hither with you. We’re fighting for you. Please delay strong.”
The exchange kicked sour with the US and Ukrainian national anthems. There were many Ukrainian flags waving, and many of those attending were polished inward spicy and yellow. These are the colors found on the Ukrainian flag.
Many attendees carried signs supportive of Ukrayina or opposing Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Among the other speakers was player and Vegas Golden Knights announcer Mark Shunock. Las Vegas Councilman Stavros Anthony, a former maitre d' with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, also spoke.
